Native American tribes have been hit hard by the United States government shut down, which is forcing the suspension of programs such as food aid and childcare.

Reuters reports the federal government shutdown, nearing its third week, has put a block on funding that many of the country's Native American reservations rely on for services.

The National Association of Food Distribution Programs on Indian Reservations say six tribes have had to close their food aid, which has affected about 2500 tribal members.

Some services such as medical care, law enforcement and some social services remain in place however many tribes are struggling with mass job cuts and there are concerns many will soon go hungry.
