Kaumatua battle it out at games

8:02 pm on 18 October 2013

About 300 Maori elders have competed in the annual Kaumatua Olympics in Hamilton.

The event, held at the Waikato tennis centre, attracted teams from throughout the North Island.

Planning co-ordinator Donna Davies says participants competed in a wide range of sports, including skittles, volleyball, hockey and basketball.

The games are modified so all kaumatua can participate whatever their ability or disability.

For the second year running, more than 50 Waikato University students helped out as part of their management studies.
