MP says sawmill closure will hurt local Maori

7:32 pm on 21 October 2013

Waiariki MP, Te Ururoa Flavell, says whanau will feel the effects of any jobs losses at the Tachikawa sawmill in Rotorua.

The company went into receivership on Friday amid tough trading conditions, and 90% of its workforce is Maori.

Te Ururoa Flavell says the effects of the losses will hit homes, not just the 150 or so workers.

He says there are not many jobs around at the moment.

Mr Flavell was one of several officials who met the receivers today.
