The country's only Bachelor of Maori Nursing programme says the effects of smoking forms part of the curriculum for all its studies and it offers help to quit smoking.
Its comment follows a New Zealand Medical Journal study, which found a third of the Maori nursing students who responded were cigarette smokers.
The Whitireia Institute of Technology in Wellington runs the only kaupapa Maori-based nursing degree.
The dean of its faculty of health, Kathy Holloway, says Whitireia has a 'no smoking' policy at all of its campuses, which applies to staff and students.
She says smoking and its effects form part of the curriculum for all Whitireia nursing programmes, and cessation support is offered as part of this no smoking policy.
