Indigenous training scheme review in Western Australia

6:52 am on 25 October 2013

The man who has been named Western Australia's richest person is leading a review of indigenous employment and training programmes for the Federal Government.

The review is intended to provide advice to Canberra to ensure the schemes are aimed at the right people and that they are administrated properly.

Mining tycoon Andrew Forrest will work closely with the Australian Government's Indigenous Advisory Council.

He says the programmes must move away from their welfare-driven approach.

Aboriginal leader Mark Spinks questions what good the indigenous training schemes are when not a lot of people actually get jobs at the end of them.

He says a lot of dollars have gone into training just for the sake of getting the training money, and it still has not solved the issue of Aboriginal unemployment.

Mr Spinks says he supports Andrew Forrest leading the review because people including the Prime Minister Tony Abbott take notice of him.

The review will report back on 7 April next year.
