Tainui tribe secures farmland for agricultural training

A Tainui tribe, Ngati Koroki Kahukura, has secured up to 500 hectares of farmland for agricultural training through Lincoln University.

Earlier this year, the tribe and its kin-iwi, Ngati Haua, signed a memorandum of understanding with the tertiary educator.

It outlines an agreement to create an agricultural training centre in Waikato, and aims to create a new farm certificate course.

An advisor and descendant of both tribes, Willie Te Aho, says Ngati Koroki Kahukura has shown university representatives around some of its farms suitable for training.

He says the land stretches from Parawera over to Arapuni and across to the Tauwhare area - covering up to 500 hectares.

Mr Te Aho says he also wants to show iwi members that they can take a direct role in managing the land.
