Maori Council and warden submissions closing

6:32 am on 31 October 2013

People have until 5pm on Thursday to submit their feedback on legislation overseeing the Maori Council and Maori wardens.

The Government has been consulting the public on the Maori Community Development Act since early September for about three weeks.

Some feedback from the hui suggests the Maori Council should not be dis-established, and that Maori wardens should come under the council.

Other people suggest Maori wardens should be overseen by its independent body, while some suggest the Ministry of Maori Development and police should have no involvement with Maori wardens.

Te Puni Kokiri (the Ministry of Maori Development) says it has so far received more than 1000 submissions.

After the submission deadline, the information will be summarised and Te Puni Kokiri will report to the Minister of Maori Affairs.
