Dictionary changes charter school definition

The online Maori dictionary has changed its definition of charter schools after being accused of originally publishing political spin.

The Green Party last week criticised the new definition of 'kura hourua', which said the partnership schools bring sectors together to provide new opportunities for students to achieve educational success.

Co-leader Metiria Turei said the interpretation bought in to government spin about hotly debated schools that do not yet exist, and she wanted it changed.

The manager of the site at the Auckland University of Technology, Professor John Moorfield, admits the definition was taken from the Ministry of Education website, but does not agree that it is all government spin.

However, he says he accepts Ms Turei's views and has extended the definition to include other arguments about what the schools do.
