7:10 pm on 8 November 2013

A teacher at a South Waikato Kura had name suppression lifted when he appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Friday.

Rueben James Tapara, who is aged 30 faces three charges of sexual violation, three of doing an indecent act on a boy aged between 12 and 16 and one of supplying cannabis to a person under the age of 18.

The charges relate to one complainant, but the police say more charges may be laid.

The Tumuaki of Te Wharekura o Te Kaokaoroa o Patetere, Keith Silveira says the arrest and charges came as a real shock and it's been hugely stressful and many tears have been shed within the school community.

He says the school in Putaruru didn't receive any complaints or expressions of concern from any parent, student or staff member and the first the school knew of it was when an arrest was made.

Mr Tapara, who had been at the school for three years, has been dismissed from his job.
