Maori blind society calls for Te Reo speakers

7:11 pm on 15 November 2013

The Maori Blind Society is encouraging rangatahi who can speak Maori to help provide visual descriptions for popular tv programmes.

Ngati Kapo o Aotearoa has just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Society tumuaki [executive officer] Chrissie Cowan says as the demand increases, audio descriptions for tv shows will provide jobs.

It will enhance the experience for blind Maori speakers during moments on television when no one is actually speaking.

Ms Cowan says the latest initiative within the visually impaired and blind community is audio descriptions.

She says there is a lot of opportunity for rangatahi who are interested in media to become involved in this type of work, including providing commentary for documentaries and serial tv shows. Coronation Street is currently the only tv show with audio descriptions.
