Govt to auction leftover spectrum blocks

The Government is to sell-off the portion of the broadcasting spectrum which did not sell at auction.

Telecom, Vodafone and the part Maori-owned mobile phone company 2degrees have already secured winning bids for a number of blocks of the 700 megahertz band, which will used for a new generation of mobile phone technology.

The Maori Spectrum Coalition has been pushing for a section of the band to be awarded to Treaty partners.

It suggested the leftover blocks should be allocated to Maori but the Government on Tuesday announced it intends to hold another auction.
