Children suspected of lighting wharenui fire to get help

Two children under the age of six - suspected of starting a blaze that's gutted a Northland wharenui - will receive lessons about the dangers of fire.

Te Uri o Hikihiki at Mokau Marae north of Whangarei was ravaged by fire about two weeks ago.

Fire investigator Terry Baylis previously told Te Manu Korihi the police suspected it was caused by two children aged 3, and 6, who were seen playing with a lighter at the nearby kohanga reo.

He's contacted the boys' grandmother, who's agreed to put them into a fire awareness prevention programme for rangatahi (young people) between 4 and 17 years of age.

Mr Baylis says the programme will teach the children about the risks of playing with fire, how hot fire can get and what injuries can be caused by flames.

He says the two boys will receive lessons from a Fire Service iwi liaison officer.
