A trustee of Mokau Marae, north of Whangarei, believes it will cost about $260,000 to replace its meeting house that had been ravaged by fire.

Clive Stone says Te Uri o Hikihiki meeting house was extensively damaged two weeks ago, with most of the carvings destroyed.

The Fire Service suspects two young boys seen playing with a lighter started the fire.

Mr Stone says he understands the marae has total replacement cover of about $260,000 through its insurance company. But he says the hapu still needs to work out with the insurance company what needs to be done.

The people of the marae have a lot to talk about, including insurance and plans for rebuilding, he says.
