The new Maori owner of a large Waikato dairy farm says it will provide jobs for tangata whenua.
The Hauraki Collective has bought the Pouarua Dairy Complex near Ngatea from Landcorp for about $53 million.
Landcorp will continue to manage the farm under a sharemilking arrangement for at least five years.
But Paul Majury, a director of the board overseeing the farm, says there will be work for local Maori. The Hauraki Collective has made it clear that they want their tribal members working on the land, he says.
Mr Majury says training opportunities and sharing farming experience is part of the iwi's vision, and there are already people in the tribal collective who are farmers and can probably mentor others.
