Ngati Huarere wants to take on Crown

7:31 pm on 29 November 2013

A Coromandel sub-tribe wants to form a group to take on the Crown over Treaty of Waitangi settlements.

Ngati Huarere says it's been left out of the Hauraki Collective and wants to settle its own claim.

Ngati Huarere ki Whangapoua administrator Wanda Brljevich says the Treaty negotiation policy isn't working.

She says according to the current Crown process, her hapu is excluded and is instead being asked to go under another iwi to access any redress for her people, which mean they would lose their mana.

Ms Brljevich says Ngati Huarere wants to korero with tribes struggling to make progress in finding their own settlement pathway to see if there is a way forward collectively.
