The Bank of New Zealand has created 10 cadet positions for Maori descendants to learn different areas of the business banking sector.
The head of Maori business at BNZ, Pierre Tohe, says it is working with Te Puni Kokiri / Ministry of Maori Development which he says provides cadetship funding.
He says the idea of getting Maori into the bank's business branches so they can learn about areas such as agribusiness has partly been prompted by tangata whenua.
Mr Tohe says as funds start coming back to iwi they have raised questions about how the bank can help them raise their financial capability.
The cadet programme will be launched at the beginning of 2014.
