The Maori Broadcasting Funding Agency - Te Mangai Paho has two new board members, while two others members have been reappointed.

Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples announced the board positions - a job which is to be handed over to a new Maori electoral college, Te Matawai, where iwi will decide who goes on the board.

Dr Sharples has appointed Eruera Prendergast-Tarena, of Ngai Tahu, and Leonie Pihama, of Taranaki descent.

He says Mr Prendergast-Tarena brings a strong background in te reo and tikanga to the board, as well as extensive strategic management skills and academic leadership.

Mr Prendergast-Tarena was also a programme leader in Maori Studies at the Christchurch Polytech Institute of Technology, received the Fullbright Scholar Award from Nga Pae o te Maramatanga Centre of Academic Excellence this year and was a First Nations Future Fellow at Standford University in 2011.

Dr Pihama has a strong background in education and diverse research interests, as well as involvement with health and sexual violence groups, Dr Sharples says.

She is an associate professor and director at Waikato University's Te Kotahi Institute and a board member of Te Atawhai o te Ao Research Institute.

Piri Sciascia has been reappointed as chair and Taria Tahana to the board, both for a further three years.
