$2.4 million for Maori research

7:37 pm on 19 December 2013

The Government will invest $2.4 million to explore new ways to bring matauranga (knowledge) Maori and science together.

Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce says the Vision Matauranga fund will help unlock the science and innovation potential of Maori knowledge, resources, and people.

The $2.4 million will be invested in a range of programmes to develop skills and networks in organisations undertaking research.

The main goal is to increase collaborations between Maori organisations and researchers, which will enable the two to better understand each other's perspectives.

Steven Joyce says that could identify matauranga Maori that can benefit the country, and increase research capacity in Maori organisations.
