Revamped wharenui opens

Bay of Plenty's Te Puke High School has opened its revamped wharenui.

The original meeting house, Kimihia Te Matauranga, was closed last year to be relocated on campus.

Local iwi blessed the new building on Wednesday, and a powhiri was held for staff and Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell.

Te Puke High School principal Alan Liddle says the old carvings and panels have been restored and added to the new building.

The wharenui is located in a more central part of the school and has a prominent position overlooking the school fields and the coast.

The Maori community connect strongly with the school, Mr Liddle says.
