Waikato iwi push Deeds of Settlement

7:50 pm on 12 February 2014

Two Waikato iwi are pushing to have their Deeds of Settlement passed into law by the elections.

The Maori Affairs Select Committee met with Ngati Koroki Kahukura and Ngati Haua in Cambridge on Wednesday to hear submissions on their packages.

Ngati Koroki Kahukura signed its deed in late 2012, which includes financial redress of $3 million and vests the Crown-owned Maungatautari scenic reserve to the community, which includes iwi.

The deed for Ngati Haua was signed in July last year, and will include $13 million redress and the return of the Maungakawa mountain.

Hauraki-Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta says the iwi are on track to have their settlements passed into legislation before the end of the year.
