A digital resource on the Waikato War is being heralded as a way of providing tours at historic reserves where there are no tour guides.
The project launched last year by the Historic Places Trust with input from Waikato-Tainui includes a driving tour of 13 sites in the region.
Trust manager Amy Hobbs says interest by councils and groups wanting to share historical information - particularly about the New Zealand Wars - is growing.
She says the resource is filling a gap, especially about events that have taken place on Crown land.
Ms Hobbs says a person would get to a site, where there are no tour guides, but because they have the app, which provides audio, signage and illustrations that can help someone imagine what it was like during a battle.
