Maori Wardens are undergoing Government-approved training courses so they can do private security work.
Radio New Zealand revealed last week that volunteers in Tairawhiti have bid for work at the Rhythm and Vines festival in Gisborne.
They say they want to step out of their traditional roles to earn money, because they're not getting any government funding.
Greg Watt from the Security Association says his organisation is providing the training, which will arm the wardens with security guard certificates.
He says the volunteers have been bidding for commercial work in both the North and South islands. Mr Watt says their development is good news for the wardens and good news for the security industry.
