Dr Sharples says the proposition was part of feedback on the Government's proposed Maori language strategy.

He says he likes the idea but the Government isn't ready to introduce a new portfolio. However, he's hopeful it could become a reality one day because it would give mana within the Government to Maori programmes.

Dr Sharples believes that person could be involved in all state spending because lots of departments have allocations set aside for Maori language initiatives.
