A small Maori immersion school in Dunedin with a history of poor reports has been told it has made major positive changes.
The Education Review Office (ERO) has delivered its latest findings on Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Otepoti, which teaches 18 children.
In the past, statutory managers were brought in to help manage finances and human resources.
But an ERO spokesperson said there was a clear commitment by whanau and wider community for the school to become more professional, increase the roll and provide high-quality education for students.
A new teaching principal who was an experienced kura kaupapa Māori teacher but a first-time principal was appointed at the beginning of last year, and students were now speaking te reo Māori confidently and achieving at or above national literacy expectations, the official said.
There was only one limited statutory manager in place this year, and that was to oversee the finance and budget.
However, the school had been told to get on top of its property, with the Ministry of Education's contractor identifying leaky building syndrome.
