A lack of support for Parihaka is stalling Taranaki Tuturu iwi from initialling its deed of settlement with the Crown.
It was meant to have joined with its two neighbours Nga Ruahinerangi and Te Atiawa to shake hands with Treaty Negotiations Minister, Chris Finlayson on Wednesday - but has pulled out at the last minute over a key matter in negotiations.
The tribe said it had always maintained that a Taranaki iwi settlement that failed to provide for Parihaka was incomplete, unacceptable and therefore, not a settlement.
It said it hadn't stepped away altogether from negotiations but would continue to work with the Crown to finalise its settlement redress package and was hopeful of finding a resolution regarding support for Parihaka.
Taranaki iwi is unsure when it will reach an agreement with the Crown but will be holding hui for iwi members to get their feedback and keep them informed.
Nga Ruahinerangi treaty negotiator Daisy Noble said her tribe almost stalled initialling their deed because of a few concerns.
She said all parties in her iwi have agreed to go ahead after deliberating over a few issues which will now be ironed out later.
Treaty negotiator for Te Atiawa Peter Moeahu said he was happy that his southern whanaunga or kin will be joining his people at Parliament on Wednesday.
A government spokesperson said some iwi moved at different speeds but it was hopeful any issues could be resolved as iwi and the Crown moved forward.
