There's a call to reserve positions on the Waitangi National Trust Board for descendants of four significant Maori figures.
The 1932 Act responsible for caring for the 500ha Waitangi estate is being revamped by Parliament.
Maori leaders Hone Heke, Maihi Kawiti, Waka Nene and Sir Maui Pomare are represented by one trust board position, which revolves between their families.
However, Pakeha figures Edward Gibbon Wakefield and Archdeacon Henry Williams have a board representative each.
A descendant of Sir Maui, Arapeta Hamilton, said the whanau of each of the four Maori chiefs should have a representative on the board - like the Pakeha whanau.
Mr Hamilton said Te Tiriti o Waitangi was about a partnership and equality, and the current situation was not equitable.
An overhaul of the Act was long overdue, he said.
