Sweet hopes for Maori land

7:46 pm on 6 June 2014

Honey was all the buzz in Kaitaia on Friday, as about 70 Maori landowners, beekeepers and investors attended the Poutama-Miere Coalition hui to discuss how to make use of under-performing land.

Richard Jones, the head of business organisation Poutama Trust, says the Far North area produces some of the highest quality manuka honey in New Zealand.

He wants to see more honey produced on Maori land, saying there is a global shortage and strong demand.

Mr Jones says Maori should be fully participating in the honey value chain - from being beekeepers and exporters to understanding the science and its medicinal aspects.

A final hui will be held in Te Araroa in August.
