Five new Maori web series, mostly targeted at younger audiences, have been selected for a new project with Te Mangai Paho and New Zealand on Air.

The joint funding venture is the first of its kind, with each production receiving $100,000.

The productions for young audiences include Kete Kōrero which will be Maori myths and a second season of Nia's Extra Ordinary Life, about a young girl who lives in Tinopai.

Both of those will be available in Te Reo and English.

Only in Aotearoa, being made by Kura Productions, will be comedy sketches targeted at rangatahi.

Another is Mahinga Kai by Te Rūnunga o Ngāi Tahu and Mai A Mua by Screentime Productions.

New Zealand on Air's Digital Strategy Manager Brenda Leeuwenberg said they put the bid out because it found there wasn't enough Maori content online.

She said it received an amazing response with 53 applications.
