Pilot farming course may expand

A Wairarapa marae believes a pilot farming course for its rangatahi could be expanded to other rohe or regions.

Papawai Marae near Featherston has been working with the Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre to teach young Maori the skills to become farm operators and managers.

Marae chairman Paora Ammunson said Taratahi is in a stage of cementing bonds with iwi across the motu.

He said if the course was a success, Taratahi had plans to take it into Waikato.

Mr Ammunson said the Masterton-based agricultural training school was also talking to Tainui, which was developing its farming portfolio.

He said the course was also being sponsored by a leading agricultural firm - PGG Wrightson - which was also building relationships with different iwi.
