Whanganui voting deadline nears

7:57 pm on 4 July 2014

Tribal descendants of the Whanganui River have only a week left to cast their votes for the iwi's Treaty of Waitangi settlement.

All adults members who belong to any of the river hapu have the opportunity to vote on whether to approve the Whanganui River Deed of Settlement and the proposed post-settlement governance entity for Whanganui iwi.

After the deed has been ratified and the settlement has been signed off later this month, the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board and other trusts will be replaced by Te Runanga o te Awa Tupua o Whanganui.

The runanga will look after all of the financial and cultural assets Whanganui iwi will receive in its Treaty settlement.

Whanganui iwi descendants who have registered first with the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board have until the 11 July to cast their ballots online, or by post.
