Henare will miss the 'buzz'

Retiring National list MP, Tau Henare, says he's going to miss the buzz he gets from politics

Mr Henare, who is Ngapuhi, entered parliament aged 33 in 1993 as a New Zealand First MP and three years later became the Minister of Maori Affairs.

He said he was interested in politics from a very young age and was inspired by his late uncle Sir James Henare who would talk about the subject when he was growing up.

He said a person must have a passion for politics because if they don't then they were just making up the numbers in the House.

Although, Mr Henare admitted that some people could accuse him of just making up numbers for the National party, which he agreed was fair enough.

He said he's enjoyed being in the debating chamber and will miss it.

Tau Henare said he didn't make a valedictory speech because it is just a waste of time.
