11:49 am on 19 September 2014

The Ministry of Maori Development, Te Puni Kokiri, wants tangata whenua to gain higher qualifications and better employment and is offering scholarships in engineering.

Six tangata whenua have received a $10,000 karahipi (scholarship), to cover tuition costs and provide valuable resources while studying towards a diploma qualification. It is the fourth year they have been offered.

Te Puni Kokiri social policy director Patsie Karauria said the aim is to increase the number of Maori working in the sector.

Mrs Karuaria said research it has carried out suggests that Maori live a longer life if they have a better income, which helps them and their whanau.
