Tracing the role of the land court

7:50 am on 3 October 2014

A new book documenting court decisions from the turn of the 21st century aims to change public perception on the role of the Maori Land Court.

Court decisions from between 1887 and 1909 will be published for the first time in a work by Victoria University's Richard Boast next year.

Professor Boast has transcribed historic minute books from the period containing judgements, saying wanted to increase people's knowledge and understanding of the court.

He said some would be relevant to ongoing cases and iwi settlements.

Professor Boast said the book would provide evidence which, for the first time, would shed a fresh perspective on what kind of institution the court was, and is.
