Iwi leaders from throughout New Zealand have been meeting regularly for almost 10 years, but it is first time the hui would be held in Tauranga.

The chair of the Ngai Te Rangi iwi, Charlie Tawhiao, said issues such as the continuing decline in global dairy prices and the reduction in log prices are of concern to iwi with farming and forestry interests.

Mr Tawhiao said the state of the economy was always going to be a major talking point, as are social, cultural and environmental issues.

Finance Minister Bill English and Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell have been invited to speak at the two-day forum to be held from 25 November.
