The 96th anniversary of Armistice Day has been commemorated throughout the country. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of November 1918, the guns fell silent across the Western Front.
Some 2227 Maori served in the New Zealand Maori Pioneer Battalion in World War I, with 336 killed.
Joe Shelford Tuki, vice-president of the Auckland 28th Maori Battalion Association, said Armistice Day was a chance to reflect on the contribution of Maori in the war.
Mr Tuki said it showed that Maori could help achieve the freedom that people in New Zealand have today, including Maori.
