Fishing by calendar could be cheaper

6:52 pm on 28 November 2014

The Society of Maori Astronomy Research and Traditions says it wants to help whanau, hapu and iwi save money by fishing according to the Maori calendar.

Some of its members presented a korero at the International Indigenous Research Conference in Auckland today.

Chairperson Pauline Harris said research is under way to create an accurate maramataka (almanac) for communities to gather kai and plant at the right times of year.

She said going out on certain days could help save a person time and money, in terms of fuel, and was another way of introducing them to sustainable ways of living and being self-sufficient.

Ms Harris she hoped it could reconnect people with Maori astronomy and traditional mahinga kai (food gathering places).
