A Wellington iwi wants people to appreciate cultural sites of significance such as Taputeranga Island in Island Bay.
A tour has been organised by Te Papa Tongarewa this month in association with Ngati Toa's Whiti Te Ra exhibition.
Because the sites are near Te Papa it was decided that it would be a good idea to take people on a bus tour.
The exhibition's kaumatua Te Waari Carkeek said although his iwi was based in Porirua, it was important to explain why Taputeranga Island - which is in Wellington and part of Te Atiawa's rohe - was part of its Treaty of Waitangi claim.
After the tour begun at Hongoeka Marae it would travel south to Taputeranga Island where he would tell the story of why Ngati Toa had received acknowledgement of its connect to the landmark.
Mr Carkeek said after that the bus tour would head to the Hutt Valley where his tupuna Te Rangihaeata and his people were forced out by of the area by Governor George Gray and his troops in the 1840s.
The final leg of the tour would continue along the trail that Te Rangihaeata took which ended at Battle Hill near Porirua, he said.
