A large portion of land in Australia's Northern Territory is being finally being returned to its indigenous owners after a nearly 40-year campaign to get it back.

It was first claimed by tāngata whenua in 1977.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion will hand back more than 200 hectares of land - which includes some small islands - at a ceremony near Borroloolamore.

The Yanyuwa people will regain control of land on the western banks of the McArthur River, in the Northern Territory.

Mr Scullion said it was culturally significant, but also full of economic potential to attract tourists to a place he described as "amazingly beautiful".

The traditional owners plan to lease some of the country to their community-owned sea ranger group.
