Five high school students from year 10 to 13 will receive personalised mentoring and education services worth $20,000 each.

The tailored tutoring and mentoring will help the students to apply and get into top-ranked universities in New Zealand and overseas.

The co-founder of education mentoring company Crimson, Jamie Beaton, said the Te Ara a Kupe Beaton Scholarship encouraged young Māori to discover their potential.

"Historically, top-ranked, competitive universities have had very little representation of Māori students and that's something we'd like to change.

"What I would love to see is our Māori scholars being world leaders in driving improved economic outcomes and improved education outcomes for indigenous students around the world."

Lily Holder-McFlinn was awarded one of last year's scholarships and said it provided her with the resources and knowledge to achieve goals she had previously believed to be impossible.

She has since been accepted into a conjoint Law and Computer Science degree at Victoria University.

Applications will close on 20 August and will be awarded in September as part of Māori Language Week celebrations.
