A series of wānanga designed to tackle education achievement for Māori kicked off today in Rotorua.
Associate Education minister Kelvin Davis said the wānanga (forums) were the biggest opportunity in decades for Māori to have a say on their education.
Issues raised at today's wānanga in Rotorua included the normalisation of te reo Māori and increasing the number of reo teachers, Mr Davis said.
"We are off to a great start. About 100 people representing whānau, hapū, iwi, and kura attended the first wānanga in Rotorua today."
Mr Davis said the government wants all Māori children, parents, families, educators and employers to attend their local wānanga and have their say.
More than 25 wānanga will be held across the country and are part of the Ministry of Education's education conversation.
