It follows the network's recent decision to end its flagship news programme Te Kāea.

In a staff email, he said it was a privilege working for the network, and he acknowledged those who fought to establish what Māori Television stands for.

"I want to thank you for working hard every day to create and broadcast Māori content," he told staff.

"I want to thank the board, particularly the board chair Jamie Tuuta, for the opportunity to support them to implement change at Māori Television."

Keith Ikin took on the role in November last year.

Shane Taurima will step in as acting chief executive until the position is filled.

His exit follows the recent resignation of the network's head of News and Current Affairs, Maramena Roderick.
