Opinion divided on need for Maori seats

8:39 pm on 1 July 2011

A Te Arawa standing committee member says Māori seats are needed on Rotorua District Council, but another says they are unnecessary.

About two months ago, Human Rights Commissioner Joris de Bres, asked for local governments, including the Rotorua council, to consider Māori seats.

Te Arawa committee member Rene Morrison Mitchell says more iwi need to sign up on the Māori electoral roll so representation can be achieved.

Another member, councillor Maureen Waaka, says Māori do not need appointed seats.

She says the purpose of the committee is to help iwi representatives to develop their political skills and give them the ability to campaign for general seats.
