Auckland settlement negotiations 'intensive'

12:33 pm on 27 August 2011

A collective of 12 iwi and hapu says its settlement negotiations with the Crown are intensive with no firm date set for a final agreement.

The Crown and the collective have already signed a framework Treaty of Waitangi agreement which will give them ownership of 11 volcanic cones, including Maungakiekie or One Tree Hill.

The sites will be jointly managed by the tribes and Auckland Council, whose 21 members discussed co-governance on Thursday.

The chair of Nga Mana Whenua o Tamaki Makaurau (the Tamaki Collective), Paul Majurey, says negotiations with the Crown have been going well since 2009.
