More Maori programme makers needed

6:33 am on 8 February 2012

The Maori Broadcasting Funding Agency says there are not enough people with training and experience to produce programmes promoting te reo Maori.

Te Mangai Paho says the pool of expertise is limited and isn't growing to meet demand.

It points out that a lack of skilled people has held back Maori broadcasters who want to reach new audiences through digital technologies, such as the internet and mobile phones.

Te Mangai Paho says, as a result, there's been a direct and adverse impact on broadcasters' ability to secure and maintain a reasonable share of Maori listeners and viewers.
