New health facilities designed for Maori of all ages

Ngati Kahungunu iwi chairman Ngahiwi Tomoana is confident proposed new integrated health facilities to be set up in Wairoa will cater for Maori of all ages.

Hawke's Bay District Health Board (DHB) has committed $5 million for a new model of health care which will see all services brought together on one site.

Mr Tomoana, who's also vice-chairman of the DHB's, says the health needs of people in the Wairoa district are greater than in other parts of the province.

He says the new model will be more whanau centred and there will be greater cohesion by Maori health providers than there is now.

The DHB held a series of community consultation meetings before Christmas to discuss its proposals and is now waiting for architectural drawings to be completed before calling for tenders.
