Waikato-Tainui chief executive Parekawhia McLean says an agreement between the iwi and Hamilton City Council over the care foe Waikato river is a significant milestone for the two organisations.

Ms McLean says the signing ceremony on Friday was attended by King Tuheitia Paki and his wife, along with Waikato MPs, councillors and members of Tainui's executive.

She says the agreement means the iwi will be involved in the council's development of policy and planning for the city.

It will also give Waikato-Tainui the right to carry out customary activities on the river such as waka ama races and placing rahui or restrictions on parts of the river for customary purposes.
