Ministry of Education to help fund nation building courses

7:23 pm on 22 February 2012

The Ministry of Education will help fund up to 40 Te Pumaomao nation building courses this year.

The course which is designed for health boards, councils, boards of trustees, teachers and community organisations, explores everything from Treaty of Waitangi relationships to what it means to be Maori.

The ministry says it provides an explicit link for schools and kura to Treaty obligations and targets within Ka Hikitia, the Maori Education Strategy.

Co-facilitator Takawai Murphy says there's been a huge amount of interest since he and his Pakeha wife Chris started running the course 20 years ago.

He says in the past year they've held courses from North Cape to Bluff as well as in Alaska, where they'll be doing follow ups this year.

Mr Murphy says the course is completely non-threatening with the information presented in a fun way.
