Call to sort out ownership of Navy occupied land

The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board in Auckland wants the Government to sort out the future ownership of three hectares of land at Narrow Neck currently occupied by the Navy.

Chairperson Chris Darby says what is known as the Tamaki land is included in a Treaty of Waitangi Deed of Settlement between Ngati Whatua o Orakei and the Crown.

Mr Darby says a meeting he convened this week between the Office of Treaty Settlements, the Defence Force and the Tamaki Reserve Protection Trust, made it clear that once the Navy leaves, the land will pass into private ownership as economic redress for Maori.

Mr Darby says following a High Court ruling in 1996 it was fully expected that once the Navy disposed of the land it would be ceded to the people of Auckland as an historic reserve.

He agrees that the iwi's grievances must be resolved, but including the Tamaki land in a settlement appears unworkable and unlawful.
