Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday
The Situation
A ridge over Aotearoa/New Zealand is receding to the North Island today. A cold front over the Tasman Sea is approaching Fiordland, and is moving up the South Island from early Thursday. Another cold front is spreading up the south of the South Island from Thursday afternoon.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula
Cloudy periods. Isolated showers about Great Barrier Island and the east coast of Northland and Coromandel.
Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taupo
Becoming cloudy tomorrow, with isolated showers in Bay of Plenty.
Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taranaki, Whanganui and Taihape
Cloud increasing. Scattered rain from tomorrow afternoon, possibly heavy in the evening.
Manawatu to Wellington
Fine spells for Kapiti and Wellington today, otherwise mostly cloudy with isolated showers.
Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa
Fine.
Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and North Otago
Cloud increasing. Rain about the Canterbury High Country and Nelson Lakes tomorrow, and a few evening showers for the rest of Nelson. Severe northwest gales in the Canterbury High Country.
Remainder of Otago, and Southland
Cloudy periods. Scattered rain tomorrow morning and evening.
Buller, Westland and Fiordland
A few showers today. Periods of rain tomorrow. Thunderstorms possible in Fiordland and south Westland.
Chatham Islands
Cloudy periods.
And the outlook for the following three days...
Friday
North Island: Rain or showers, easing later. South Island: Rain or showers in the west and south, easing. Snow to 600 metres in the far south at first. Partly cloudy with scattered showers elsewhere, easing late.
Saturday
North Island: Mainly fine, but the odd shower about Gisborne at first. South Island: Scattered showers for Fiordland and Southland, mainly fine elsewhere.
Sunday
North Island: Mainly fine, the odd shower in the north. South Island: Showers for Fiordland, and a few showers for Stewart Island, otherwise fine.
And at the Chathams
Rain developing Friday, easing to a few showers Saturday as strong northwesterlies turn lighter southwest. A few showers for Sunday, with westerlies easing.
