Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill has been appointed to the 2015 Rugby World Cup board.

He and Wales Rugby Union chairman David Pickering were elected unopposed on Thursday.

As well as overseeing the 2015 World Cup in England, the board is responsible for presiding over the 2013 World Cup Sevens in Russia, the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup in France and working on the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

In October, O'Neill said the ARU would lose $A16 million from taking part in the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand and the combined amount the South Africa, New Zealand and Australia unions would lose would be $A38 million.
